Assam Black Organic

Assam Black Organic

Like the rest of our Collection, Assam Black is single origin distillation from agarwood trees that were at least fifty years old at the time of harvest. What I mean by 'single origin' is not just a general region, or country, or island. What I mean is that all trees used in this extraction were harvested from one and the same jungle in the Tripura district of Assam. But that's not all!

The beauty of it is, this oil is the result of organized cultivation efforts put in place by the Indian Government back in the 1950s. Massive amounts of Aquilaria Agallocha seeds were planted in the jungles of Tripura, in an effort to preserve wild growing agarwood trees. No less than fifty years later, we've harvested an amazing crop of sustainably planted trees, and extracted an oil that smells anything but cultivated!

We don't mean to slight our well-meaning competition, but compare this cultivated 50-year-old oil to the 5- to 10-year-old distillations on offer elsewhere, and we're sure you'll see that unless we point out these facts some unsuspecting fanciers might be lead into believing all 'Ouds' were created equal. Not to mention the ever-depleting supply of wild agarwood; now it is high time we start thinking about how the future of Oud will unfold.

With the new craze of statue-carving out of Oud wood, it is downright appalling what goes on behind the scenes of the Oud producing world to get hold of the last few batches of wild raw materials. In an effort to go organic and eco-friendly, we reach out to you to think twice before endorsing any further harvests of wild agarwood from the all but barren jungles. When distilled Artisanally, carefully harvested cultivated Oud wood can yield Oud oils of comparable quality to wild harvests. And Assam Black is living proof of this.

Black, woody, and insanely potent, Tripura Oud is a new point of departure from the classic barn-funk aroma of Assam Oud oil. A heady, zesty, spicy and unmistakably black Oud fragrance that speaks wealth, discernment, refined taste and the ultimate style. (We wonder what Tom Ford would have to say about this one?)

Extraction date: May 2008. This oil has aged naturally for over three years! What does that mean? No lamping, no sunning, no airing! No force-aging, period! This oil has not been oxidized in order to smell comparable to a naturally aged oil. Left alone to age and marinate in its own delectable scent molecules, this oil guarantees a good several decades of shelf life, unlike the artificially oxidized oils on offer elsewhere, whose shelf-life is cut into less than half by the effects of force-aging.

Extraction yield: 25 tolas. Once we run out of the initial distillation, we cannot reproduce this oil again. Claim your own tola (or two!) of this beautiful Artisanal extraction, and help make a difference in preserving the sacred Aquilaria tree!

3 full grams (by weight!) of sustainably harvested Artisanal Oud Oil™.

Here's what other people are saying about Assam Black Organic

Today I applied some Black Assam that I purchased last year. This has become a favorite of mine because of the change it undergoes when I'm wearing it. I notice in particular that after about eight hours all of the 'barnyard' notes have dropped away and what is left is an incredibile floral scent that is just magnificent and completely different from the scent when this oud is first applied. I have more expensive ouds and will continue to buy them from you but the Assam Black has proved to be amazing and dynamic. – Scott Burnside, CA

Assam Black has not so much a barnyard smell to it but rather the smell of horses – noble horses. It is rich, sweet, grassy and dark. One moment you're rolling in sweet hay in the summer countryside, and the next you are lurking under a dark, moist canopy of a redwood forest. It lasts all day and slowly tapers off. – Manuel Cross, CA

I had my first touch of Oud yesterday, and I'm still trying to find the right words to describe the experience; difficult. It was amazing, unbelievable, and I had to take time to imbibe the overwhelming depth, strength and richness of the fragrance.

The delivery came while I was at work, and my wife opened the bottle, calling me: 'Horses, strong beautiful horses…and wood, so rich and deep!'

That evening I came home, opened the box, and the gentle, sublime miracle was suddenly in my hands, far away from its home in Assam. The next moment I was grateful that the gem of ancient seers and holy writings had found its way to me. The moment I opened the bottle, the words 'Oh my God!' came to my mouth, and I couldn't believe its overwhelming fragrance…made by Nature…

As I breathed in slowly, I saw horses running through the endless hayfields with tremendous strength, their muscles moving in rhythmic gallop; dried wheat straw in the stables, and the sun.

Then suddenly the smell of wood and fresh air filled me, like the mountain breezes touch your face, and at the back appeared, unexpectedly, the sweet nutty undertone that softly calmed the wildness of the previous note, supported by a cedar tone, a cooling sensation inside, taking me deeper and deeper…leaving me helpless, in total amazement. I would name it, soft wildness…

After a while I came back to my senses, and I understood why this fragrance is so precious. Some may think it is because of the rareness of the product, or many other reasons. But I think it is because, unlike any other fragrance, it takes you on a journey, a journey into the world of beauty and freedom, into the world of dreams.

This proud scent is not for those afraid of change and adventure, but for hearts of valor, ready to bear its proud and straight richness.

Only the Primordial could create such amazing beauty, hiding in one simple drop the whole world. We can only be thankful for having a chance to have more than one such drop to experience and enjoy.

Thank you very much for making this experience possible with your excellent product. There is only one problem…I can't take my nose from my hand.

The first swipe of Assam Black on my wrist begins with the primitive and savage scent of the wild. Of nature itself. As I move my hand closer to fully experience its subtle variations, I am taken aback by the harsh reality that this Oud will indeed take me completely out of my comfort zone. To a place where the synthetic pleasantness of today is replaced by the smell of the evolution of organic components and a natural maturation of scent progression that may take awhile to fully understand. An Oud of this caliber requires time and effort in order to truly grasp and appreciate its unique qualities, walking a fine line between pleasurable and an untamed dark, beastly scent which profoundly resonates throughout its development. Overall, Assam Black calms my senses and allows me to relax. The more time I spend with it, the easier it is to fully appreciate and recognize that it is indeed a beautiful and aesthetic aroma. This is one Oud I do not want to be without. – Chris, USA
